What do you get when you put recycling and a flashmob together?

Inspired by this video on Youtube, we decided to give it a try ourselves. We set up bottles near a recycling bin in the heart of Orchard and waited. Our wait was fruitful, with 3 different individuals from varying backgrounds taking up the initiative to recycle our bottle, only to find out it was a trap that triggered a mob of people cheering in all directions for that noble act.

Kudos to Agent Darryl, who did a great job helping to plan for and playing our ‘TV Host’ role in the mission, and thanks to everyone else who sacrificed their Saturday afternoon to come down and participate, your help is much appreciated in making this one of our best turnouts for a mission in a long time.

See you again soon, and remember, recycle!

One saturday afternoon, 10 agents. We had fun.

The weather didn’t turn out as how we expected. It was drizzling. Nonetheless, the mission had to go on.

After the agents gathered, we started out with 2 rounds of hide & seek in the rain. It was one unlike any other we all’ve probably played before, instead of the urban city scape, you’ve to blend in with nature, hence many of 0ur agents resorted to hiding in the bushes, behind trees, or even up the tree! We were so well hidden that most of the passer bys didn’t even notice that we’re playing a game of hide & seek.

As the rain got heavier, we proceeded down to the underpass to play catching (tag). In order not to disturb the other people in the underpass, we brisk walked instead of running, which ended up rather funny to us and the others who even stopped their practice to watch us play. The location also added a challenge to the game as the catcher had to work out his strategy using the many pillars and corners in the underpass. We also played various card games in the underpass as we wait for the rain to stop.

As the sky cleared, we proceeded out for the last game – to hide the board. Though one might be wary of it’s size, hence not very easily hidden, it blend in well with the surroundings and it proved to be a challenge as we took turns, 2 agents at a time, to hide the board while the others struggle to find it. Our creative agents hid the board well, among the bushes, up a tree, and even into the ground.

Though exhausted, we all left with smiles on our faces.

Here is what one of our agents, Ter Shien, had to say:

I think Simple Pleasures was a short, small but a very fun event. I had tons of fun, even with such a small group of people, because they were all great. To be honest, I wasn’t looking forward to this event because of the number of people, but who knows, I had much more fun than I actually thought! I’m really looking forward to such events again! (PS fast-walk catching was the BEST GAME EVER!)

Choreographer: Agent S.Dasuki
Feet Captain: Agent Goh Koon Hui
Hands Captain: Agent R.Lebrun
Vocal Captain: Agent S.Dasuki

We had a 40-strong force of dancers. To some of us, we spent 3 weekends at the stuffy bomb shelter between Esplanade and Citylink Mall. To the others, it was an afternoon of sweat and tears. Nonetheless, our goal is the same – to put up an impromptu dance gig in our local performing arts center.

The gig started at about 7.30PM, with our agents blending into the audience of a malay performance at the concourse. Little did anyone expect something out of the ordinary, but 10 minutes later, it all happened. Random words were heard, followed by a strong marching sound. Then people clapping, and people singing. It was evident that something is taking place. Just as it reached the climax, it all ended with a BOOMZ, leaving the public puzzled, with some even asking for more. All of a sudden, life returns to normal as though nothing had happened. It was a huge success.

Unfortunately, one of our videographers got into trouble with the security, and Agent S.Dasuki stepped in to clear the air. The authorities decided to be kind and let us off, but that came with a price, we had to give up our footages which could be used as evidence by them. We left with our heads held high, knowing that we’ve put in our best and are all now eligible to say, “I’ve performed in the Esplanade”.

A week later, we did a second take. This time, we found a ‘safer’ location and with better planning, were able to carry it out smoothly and without hiccups. We all had fun.

Below are some of our Agent’s stories.

Agent Ker Hsian (Dancer):
it was that much greatness and big impact that we could even help others at the same time.

Agent Wei Thai (Dancer):
My role was the foot section where we did some of the foot stomping and stuffs like that.
It was simple and yet when combining the whole sections together. It was truly a world class musical act. Even though we’ve only practiced for like only 30 minutes.
The performance took place inside the esplanade. I was in front and our section started off the performance. It worked out beautifully; it was as wonderful as I’ve never done anything like this before. About 3/4 way through our performance we ran into security. They came and said “Stop this, Please Stop this”. I looked at my closest agent and he gave me the “who the heck cares about those guys” look. So I smiled and continued dancing. There was a moment that we had a pause in our performance, which was part of our routine. The securities thought that was the end. When we suddenly jumped and stomped our feet, they really got shocked. We capped off our performance with a “Boomz”. And we walked away. Sadly our cameraman got held hostage by the security and we had to pay a ransom of all our video recorded. We thought, that was the end of our performance. But the best was yet to come. Apparently, a guy saw our performance and liked it. He asked us if we could do an encore for a man going to propose to his girlfriend. We said yea why not? Let’s make someone happy.
We gave a splendid performance for the couple not to mention how we witnessed the couple saying I do. Awwwwwww that was so sweet. This mission proved to me that we Singaporeans aren’t boring.

[2nd Take] I met up with the rest about 15 minutes late, well had to rush all the way from expo (working at IT fair) and saw many familiar faces. Although the turnout wasn’t as much as the previous outing. We had new recruits. I was in my foot section like the previous mission and still remembered my steps. Was a little rusty at times but after abit of practice I got it all under control. We practiced our routines and perfected it in no time. And it was green lights to start our mission. The mission was a success. Really delighted to have taken part in this one. It was a mission with a vengeance you can say. We’ve got our performance and the video and we were happy.

Agent Pirom (Dancer):
Sound experiment was pretty good, both as a participating member and as an experience overall. But perhaps a more complex number next time would be more awesome-er.
